Cute as a Button...

I've recently been wanting to rewatch a favorite movie of mine, Coraline. Its a shame Ive never read the book (even though I am a fan of Neil Gaimans other works), I suppose I will put that on my list of things to do.

Originally this started out as a series of doodles to keep me occupied until I could buy the movie, but I liked the sketch so much I decided to finish it up. Ive been experimenting a lot with painting, and adding more colors into the mix. Im still having trouble with light source. Obviously on this image the source is the button moon, but it looks like the light is coming from infront of her. To my defense the moon wasnt in the original sketch and wasnt added until much later. (Also look there are trees...behind the moon.. haha...ha)

Hometown Ghost

My newest painting Hometown Ghost. It took approximately an hour and a half to complete. The birds nesting in the ribcage/lungs of a young woman was something I played around with in sketches for awhile. I wasnt sure exactly how I wanted to do it, in some of the concept sketches the girl was holding an empty birdcage on a chain, but that was scrapped for the bone arms. I feel like I could have added more detail, and I am sad a lot of the coloring detail was lost when the textures were added. I know there are some anatomy issues. I don't know much about the human skeletal structure or insides, but I did use some reference pictures.

Eventually prints will be for sale on my etsy shop, if I ever open it.

You can also check out the progress video.

Thanks for looking!

Wonderland Ladies

I've been wanting to do a Wonderland set for quite awhile. My original idea was to do all the characters as pretty ladies, but I decided to stop at the ones who are actually female.

The Queen was the first to be drawn and really the testing subject for the set. I knew I wanted to do portraits similar to the one I did for The Nearsighted Owl, but take it a step farther with more detail and textures. Alice was next and is my favorite (just look at Chesh's face!) I knew I wanted her looking dainty. Duchess I had the most trouble with. She is described as the most hideous woman ever. I didn't want that, though. I wanted her pretty, but unique. I wanted features not typically associated with "beautiful" faces. I just hope I did a good job!
